Let me start by saying, that there is nothing wrong with aging – aging is a privilege that some people don’t get.

Having said that I do think you can slow aging.

Some say that how well you age is mostly down to genetics, however, a study conducted at Columbia University in New York showed that identical twins with different lifestyles aged differently.
In fact, lifestyle was shown to be a far bigger factor than genetic influences. The full study can be found here.

Here are my 10 lifestyle Habits to slow down aging:

1. Sunscreen Daily

I’ve worn sunscreen daily, without fail, for over 25 years. Exposure to the sun is the number one cause of premature aging.

2. Retinol

Use prescription Tretinoin daily.
Because retinoids help your skin make more collagen, they soften wrinkles and fine lines. Retinoids also help fade age spots. Tretinoin (Retin-A) is a popular prescription choice for aging skin.

3. Anti-Inflammatory Lifestyle

I have had an anti-inflammatory lifestyle for 10 years, with minimal amounts of alcohol, red meat, and not overeating. It was a conscious effort because inflammation is the cause of disease and aging in the body.

4. Be Calm

I’ve always maintained a calm demeanor and a positive attitude regardless of the circumstances. I don’t let stress or negativity eat at me, which elevates cortisol hormone levels and inflammation in the body.

5. Exercise

Stick to low to moderate exercise activities, such as walking and yoga, all of which are less prone to injury.

6. Diet

My diet has become much healthier in the past few years. I eat more fruits vegetables and legumes that are nutrient-dense. I don’t crave pizza, cookies, or burgers, but I love golden apples, kimchi, and garlic hummus. I have replaced pasta and croissants with Life-changing Crackers” (watch the video with the recipe) and quinoa.

7. Minimize toxins

I do my best to minimize toxins that can accumulate in the body, such as BPAs pesticides, or advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). I avoid using plastic containers and glassware, try to consume organic produce when possible, and minimize consumption of fried/barbecued/processed foods.

8. Silk pillowcase

I change my cotton pillowcase to a silk pillowcase. A smooth surface with very little friction means less tugging on the skin than with a traditional cotton pillowcase, we get ‘crush wrinkles’ from sleeping on our side/face, so we may get less of those when sleeping on silk. Studies show that friction from tossing and turning causes creases in the skin, but a silky-smooth surface can reduce that effect in the long run.

9. Sleep

Sleep for at least 8 hours every day. Sleep deprivation is linked to skin aging as well as poor cognitive performance.

10. Respect your body

I have been mindful to not take my body for granted. If we are older than 50, we start to experience disease from the long-term abuse in our youth – heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. It’s a complex myriad of lifestyle factors from a lifetime of small choices. Respect the body, it’s the only one you have.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the United States, only two skincare ingredients that the FDA will legally let you claim to be anti-aging: are SPF and Retinol.

Vitamin C increases the elasticity of your skin. Omega 3 fish oils and coconut oil contains vitamin E and healthy fats, which help to make your skin look smoother.

Use a good quality moisturizer with retinol, drink plenty of water and make sure you get enough sleep. Keep out of the sun and wear a broad-spectrum SPF which is at least factor 30 every day.

One of the causes of aging is oxidation. The same chemical reaction causes iron to rust, or fats or oils to go rancid. Oxygen plays a similarly corrosive role in our bodies and can damage DNA, mitochondria, and cell membranes. This type of damage in the body is the underlying cause of many diseases, particularly those of the heart, lungs, and brain since these organs are heavy users of oxygen.
