How to minimize the appearance of crepey skin under the eyes?

Crepey Skin Under the Eye

Crepey skin, bags, dark circles, and hollowing under the eyes give away our age and makes us look older and tired.

The eyes are the first things people look at when making contact with one another.

If you have ever used crepe paper to make streamers for a party, then you know what crepey skin looks like. Crepey skin is skin that has become overly thin and wrinkled. It can affect large areas of skin and can make it noticeably more fragile and thinner. This occurs when the elastin in our skin has been damaged and reduced. As elastin is a crucial component of the skin, it is the protein that allows your skin to remain flexible, so it can spring back after movement. [source]

What Causes Crepey Under Eyes Skin?

  1. Redistribution of the fat
  2. Thinning of the skin (due to collagen loss) causing blood vessels to be more visible creating a bluish effect; lines and folds
  3. Rapid and excessive weight loss
  4. Underlying medical conditions
  5. Smoking, pollution
  6. Genetics
  7. Dry skin

4 Reasons Why You Don’t Need an Eye Cream

1. EYE CREAMS CAN COMPLICATE SKINCARE ROUTINE

Adding an eye cream to your skincare routine can unnecessarily complicate your skincare routine. It’s one more product you have to buy and one more step you have to do, and we are all too busy for that.

Use high-quality anti-aging serums and creams that you already have instead.

2. MARKETING GIMMICK

Skincare industries use very lucrative promises to make you spend more money. They use a lot of aggressive claims that don’t have any solid studies to back them up, or other marketing strategies to justify the high prices.

3. TOO EXPENSIVE

These creams are typically awfully expensive with less potent ingredients.

4. DISTRACT YOU FROM OVERALL SKIN HEALTH

They distract you from the main problem to an eye area, instead of focusing on better skin practices overall.

If you still want to buy eye cream here are my recommendations…

How to pick out the best eye cream for crepey under eyes skin?

These are my top recommendations for an AFFORDABLE drugstore eye cream that will give you results.

Eye creams are designed to treat four main problems

HYDRATION

Moisturizing Creams That Concentrate on Hydration of The Skin.

You want to look for an eye cream with

  • Niacinamide
  • Ceramides
  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • Thicker texture

From Drugstore:

Cetaphil Hydrating Eye Gel Cream (or amazon.ca)– I like this one because it also has Licorice root extract in it, which helps with dark circles and makes your eye look more radiant.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost for Eyes (or amazon.ca)– This is a simple Hyaluronic Acid moisturizer. The hydro-boost face cream is similar to that.

Cerave Eye Repair Cream (or amazon.ca)– It has a cocktail of great ingredients in it like Niacinamide, Ceramides, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, and Plant Extracts, that you will normally see in some of the expensive skincare brands. It’s super moisturizing and eczema-friendly.

They all provide great hydration for the under-eye area and probably will be suitable for many different skin types.

But if you want to save money just use your face moisturizer. Face moisturizers should be safe around the eye area as well and they have all the great ingredients in them that eye creams do.

TOP RECOMMENDATION:  CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream

You can buy this amazing cream that you can use on your face as well as under your eyes, rather than spending on two separate products. CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream works beautifully under the eye and the consistency of this product is a bit thicker it’s almost like a balm.  It gives intense hydration and also has Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, Peptides, and Fragrance-Free. This cream has a very low chance to cause irritation. I love this one but be careful not to load it up too much or it can make your eyes in the morning a little puffy.

It’s a staple in my routine during the winter.

DARK CIRCLES

Eye Creams That Will Fix Dark Circles and Puffiness

You should be looking for a cream with Caffeine, Optical Diffusers like Titanium Dioxide. This will help decrease the look of dark circles by contracting down blood vessels or reflecting the light off the skin.

Of course, it will be a temporary improvement (for me it lasted 2 hours only ☹) it will not give any actual results or lasting change.

La Roche-Posay Pigmentclar Dark Circles Eye Cream – What makes this cream unique, that it’s tinted with Iron Oxides which further helps camouflage this dark circle and it has antioxidants like Ferulic Acid. It also has a metal applicator, that creates a cooling sensation when applied to the skin around your eyes.

Aveeno Absolutely Ageless Eye Cream – This one has a similar ingredient list Plant Extract, Optical Diffusers, Antioxidants as the more expensive SkinCeuticals A.G.E.  Eye Complex. In addition, Aveeno eye cream doesn’t have Fragrance or Parabens.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY TIP: Use a Tinted Mineral Sunscreen with Titanium Dioxide and Iron Oxides which will have the same effect of covering dark circles + providing UV protection.

ANTI-AGING

Eye Creams That Provide Anti-Aging Benefits To Fix Fine Lines And Crows Feet.

The most useful will be creams that contain Retinol or Retinaldehyde. These ingredients could be problematic if you get them into your eyes. You have to be very careful about applying retinol products to this area and because of that many brands will create separate creams with retinol for the face and an eye area. Eye cream will have by far a lower concentration of retinol in it, to decrease the risk of problems to the eye area.

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Eye Cream (or amazon.ca)– It has a carefully formulated retinol complex as well as Hyaluronic Acid for hydration of the skin.

La Roche Posay Redermic R Eyes (or amazon.ca)– This brand has several eye creams, but if you going to choose one, this one has Retinol and Retinyl Ester, so this will be most effective for addressing signs of aging, in my opinion. It also has caffeine for addressing dark circles, Hyaluronic Acid for moisturization. It’s really a good all-around product for addressing many concerns around the eye area.

Olay Eyes Retinol 24 MAX Night Eye Cream (or amazon.ca) – This one has two types of Retinols (Retinol and Retinyl Ester) as well as Peptides and Niacinamide

TOP RECOMMENDATION: Avene RetrinAl Eyes – it contains Retinaldehyde which is the form of Retinoid that has to undergo only two conversions inside your skin to get to active Retinoid Acid form to create an anti-aging effect. It also has a thicker texture that does a great job at hydrating under-eye skin.

PROTECTION

Cream Designed to Protect Skin Around Your Eyes. Basically, Sunscreen Dedicated to The Eye Area.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY TIP: Regular sunscreens are safe to use on eyelids and eye areas. Just use sunscreen that works well for you and apply it to your entire face.

Can Crepey Skin Under the Eyes Be Reversed

You can reverse crepey skin under the eyes with dermatologist intervention.

Topical creams can provide a temporary solution, but with the treatment provided by a dermatologist, you can get a result that will last up to a year.

FILLERS

A filling agent like Radiesse or Sculptra is injected into your skin for stimulation of collagen production and the thickening of your skin. It will smooth crepey skin and lighten dark circles.

Fine lines under the eye can be addressed with a small amount of well-placed derma filler. It’s similar to a retinoid cream, but with faster results.

LASER

Lasers specifically designed to stimulate collagen-like the V-Beam, Smoothbeam, and Laser Genesis—can work wonders for wrinkles, tone, and skin laxity. But an area I’m excited about is medical grade LED treatments. This uses intense lights to stimulate the skin to immediately start creating more collagen. – [source]

For those with darker skin that is intolerant of fractional lasers, micro-needling is the way to go, as it will also trigger collagen building.

I recommend scheduling a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist for an in-person evaluation and customized treatment plan that will address your needs and goals.

Natural Cure for Under Eye Crepey Skin

There are no “home remedies” that people have found for treating crepey under-eye skin. You can prevent the development of crepey under-eye skin by:

  1. The most effective natural way to prevent crepey skin from developing is to protect the skin from UV exposure by wearing a sun hat, sunglasses, and applying mineral sunscreen SPF of 30 or higher to your eyelids and under-eye area, when outside in the sun.
  2. Use moisturizing concealer. My favorite is IT Cosmetics Under Eye Concealer.
  3. Remove makeup thoroughly at the end of the day with a cream cleanser. I wrote more about it in the article “What The Best Makeup Remover For Dry Mature Skin?”.
  4. Sleep on your back with your head elevated. A wedge pillow can help with under-eye puffiness, bags and reduce sleep apnea. Click to see via Amazon.

Misconceptions About Crepey Under Eye Skin

Myth 1: The Best Treatments For Wrinkles Are Expensive

FACT:  Because the development of wrinkles is the normal aging process, many brands created creams, serums, and gadgets claiming to smooth your skin and make it wrinkle-free – some of which come with a hefty price tag.

The most effective wrinkle routine is minimal, the fewer products the better.

You can check out my morning and evening routines.

Myth 2: It Must Be Good If It’s Burns

FACT: Some active ingredients like Vitamin C and Alfa/Beta hydroxy acids can produce a slight tingling sensation, but if you applied the product and feel a burning sensation remove the product right away.

Myth 3: Moisturizing Prevent Wrinkles From Forming

FACT: Using a moisturizer is a must and it will make wrinkles less noticeable, but it will not necessarily prevent form forming new wrinkles.

eyes with a lot of wrinkles around them

Myth 4: You Only Need To Wear Sunscreen On A Sunny Day

FACT: You should wear sunscreen when it is sunny, on a cloudy day, and indoors. Just apply it in the morning after your morning routine and reapply in the afternoon.

Myth 5: I Can’t Use Retinol If I Have Sensitive Skin

FACT: Retinol products vary in strength, if you have sensitive skin try over-the-counter cream. Start slowly with a pea-size amount and see how your skin will handle it.

Myth 6: Preparation H Gets Rid Of Puffy Eye Bags

FACT: Hemorrhoid creams work by constricting blood vessels and are anti-inflammatory, so in theory, they seem perfect for treating under-eye bags. However, these creams are not designed for the eye area and can cause harm if they get into the eyes. Long-term use can cause thinning and dryness of the skin around the eyes. [source]

Myth 7: Wearing Makeup Everyday Is Bad For Your Skin

FACT: Makeup is not the problem and nowadays many makeup products have skincare ingredients in them. It’s not removing makeup completely at night leads to clogged pores. Rubbing eyes too much and using harsh drying cleansers will dry out thin under-eye skin and promote wrinkle development.

The best way to remove makeup is to use a double cleansing process.

Myth 8: Drinking Water Keeps Your Skin From Drying Out

FACT: What keeps skin moist is oil, not water. Drinking water will help your body to function properly, but your skin may still look dry.

CONCLUSION

To recap, you will need to make hydration a priority! Use gentle exfoliation (lactic acid) and pay attention to product ingredients. Use serums with peptides, hyaluronic acid, as well as retinol, and dermatological treatments to help treat and prevent crepey under-eye areas.
