Christmas beauty: 5 easy ways to look party-ready in no time (even if you are staying at home)

Two women over 50 celebrating Holiday. New Year or Christmas
5 Christmas beauty tips to look party-ready in no time, even if you are staying at home.

Dinner dates are down, and that little get-together is getting smaller by the minute.

For these holiday day events, keep your makeup more neutral but add a little something special!…

How about shimmer?

As you read these tried-and-true Christmas beauty make-up tips, keep this in mind: Don’t try to reclaim your youth, instead, reclaim yourself… you, but only better.

When you’re over 50, the goal of applying makeup shouldn’t be to make you look younger. Instead, it should gracefully enhance your best features and offer flattering, subtle highlights to your face.

I believe it’s always about being the best you can be, and makeup can go a long way to help you to look and feel your best.

1. SMOKE UP

Love a smoky eye? Avoid makeup looking too heavy on crinklier or hooded eyes by avoiding thick black eyeliner. Use soft, smudged shades in brown if you have light skin. You can still create a smokey eye when you’re in your 50s…here is how to do it properly.

Focus most of the color on the corners of the outer lids and keep the inner corners clean and naked.

TIP: A general rule of thumb when choosing eyeshadow is to compliment your eye color and your clothing color. Blue eyes pop with earth tones while green eyes look great with purple. Almost any color works on brown eyes.

Next, take a fine eyeliner pencil, such as the fantastic “Sephora collection ultimate gel waterproof eyeliner pencil” (Shimmer Navy), or Essence Long-lasting Eyeliner Waterproof Pencil, and work in the secret style of tight-lining. Make sure your pencil is soft enough, then from where your lashes start, gently pull your lid up to expose the upper waterline and trace a dark pencil line along the inside. The tight lining doesn’t show but it miraculously makes lashes look thicker, and eyes more defined. You’ll love the effect so much, you’ll get used to doing it in no time!
If you have small eyes, try stopping your line just before you hit the inside of the eye.

2. YES, GIRL, YOU CAN SHIMMER

Don’t believe any of the nonsense, glittery eyeshadow isn’t ruled out for grown-ups, it’s just better to shimmer rather than sparkle. Take a fingerprint of a subtle glimmer shadow and print it on your eyelids. Silvery gold, champagne, pinky nude, or bronze powder work best. Applying the powder with a damp finger tends to help the glimmer stay in place longer. My favorite eyeshadow, all year round, is the e.l.f, Bite-Size Eyeshadows, Cream & Sugar, or Rose Water Eyeshadow Palette.

MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot as Eyeshadow Primer. Best for hooded eyes. When I wear eyeshadow, it keeps them put on my eyelids without transferring to my upper lid or creasing. I also love a subtle wash of shimmer on my lids and that’s what MAC paint pot does. It gives a beautiful hint of a brightening glimmer. I love the way it looks and it’s seriously long-wearing.

3. RAISE THOSE BROWS

Good eyebrows can make you look years younger. Keeping your brows nice is like having a face-lift without surgery.
Droopy eyes can be changed by slightly arching the brows and extending them outward toward the temples (rather than having the tail curve down around the eye). The arch is an important part of the brow and should be a gradual and very gentle lift.

A FEW TIPS FOR GETTING PERFECT BROWS:
1. Fill in your brows with a brow pencil to make them appear fuller.
2. Avoid drawn-in brows. The pencil-thin line with no hair can look fake and overdone. Filling thin brows will give you a much more natural look.
3. Don’t tweeze gray brow hairs. Instead, conceal them with brow mascara, I like this gel mascara from Essence Eyebrow Gel Mascara.

4. LOVE A RED LIP

The best thing about wearing a strong, bold lip color is that it barely needs any other makeup to go with it. The trick is just a little definition of drama.
Easy.

TIP: As we age, our lips tend to lose their color. As a result, we may need to try a darker lipstick shade, especially in the winter. You should look for a lipstick shade that is just enough to highlight the shallow, lighter lip tone that older women are blessed with. My favorite is Milani Keep It Full Lip Gloss 13 Rosewood.

TIP: Tips to choose the right lipstick shade for mature over 50 lips.
1. Avoid full matte
2. Pick a moisturizing formula
3. opt for long-wearing formulas

5. FLAWLESS SKIN

Since the goal is healthy-looking skin, you want a base that’s effortless and just covers the areas that need covering, leaving the rest bare. This is the key to more youthful, less caked makeup.

I love The Body Shop All-In-One Face Base and Fresh Nude Foundation for a more lightweight glowy look, but there are so many good ones out there. Take the time to go and have foundation matched to your skin and at The Body Shop you can get a free sample to try.

TIP: Skin grows more pallid with age, so if you’re wearing a matchy-matchy foundation, it can leave you looking pasty. Puts life back into her skin with a slightly warmer tone. You can also just mix an exact-match shade with the next darkest hue on the back of your hand, and then apply with a foundation brush.
