6 Things About Lactic Acid or Secrets to A Youthful-Looking Skin

Do you want to have youthful-looking skin?

Did you ever consider using a chemical exfoliator?

Are you scared that it will burn your skin and you will walk around with a red face?

I did.

My skin is very sensitive and for a long time, I avoided any harsh chemicals on my skin. It took me 6 months to train my skin for tretinoin cream!

But after watching YouTube skincare videos, I decided to give a lactic acid a try.

Lactic Acid one of the gentles’ exfoliators and suited for mildly sensitive skin.

What Is Lactic Acid?

Lactic acid is an antiwrinkle and pigmentation-fighting ingredient found in sour milk. It was used by ancient Egyptian for centuries to improve the overall aesthetics of skin. It works by dissolving the “glue” that holds dead skin cells together.

If you haven’t tried lactic acid yet and want to learn more, keep on reading….

Benefits of Lactic Acid

1// Exfoliating

It exfoliates dead skin to promote collagen production, which smooths fine lines and minimizes pore size for more youthful-looking skin.

2// Moisturizing

Lactic acid is also humectant or saying plainly it attracts water to your skin.

So, it exfoliates and hydrates skin at the same time.

3// Fades dark spots and evens skin tone

Lactic acid will also even skin tone and fade discolorations since it is shading top layer of your skin.

Is Lactic Acid Good for Face Skin Discoloration

Lactic acid is used to treat hyperpigmentation, age spots, and uneven complexion. Other benefits of AHAs like lactic acid include improved skin tone and reduced pore appearance. However, unlike AHAs such as glycolic acidlactic acid is a bit milder

Can I Use Lactic Acid Every day?

You can use it once per day at night.

If your skin is sensitive or if you are new to acids, I recommend starting with Lactic Acid 5% + HA and applying it once or twice per week.

Can I Mix Lactic Acid with Niacinamide?

Yes, you can but keep in mind that it will make your acid less effective.

Acids typically have a pH between 3.0 and 4.0, while niacinamide is around 5.0 to 7.0.

When you mix them together, the niacinamide will raise the pH level of the acid.

Also mixing niacinamide and acid can cause redness and irritation.

Side Effects of Lactic Acid

Lactic acid considered to be less irritating from all AHA exfoliants. It’s still an acid. If it irritates your skin, consider using micro cloth.

Lactic acid will increase photosensitivity and sensitivity to sun UV rays. Make sure you are using sunscreen daily.

It can also cause mild irritation, rush, and itchiness. Especially at the beginning and then will go away after you get used to the product.

If you apply lactic acid to an open sore or skin that is already peeling and flaking, it can lead to a burn or scarring.

The dermatologist doesn’t recommend using lactic acid if you have:

  • eczema
  • psoriasis
  • rosacea

Lactic Acid Products to Try

With sensitive skin go for a lighter peel with a 5% acid content.

A medium peel can range from 10 to 15 % lactic acid, start from using them once or twice a week.

The problem is that lactic acid seldom used along. It’s usually pared with glycolic acid which is not appropriate for sensitive skin.

I found a couple of products.
